Corona Virus and Pelvic Floors

The corona virus pandemic is, obviously, of terrible concern for individuals and for public health.

The main mode of transmission is respiratory droplets produced by coughing, which then work their way into the mouths and noses of others.  Up to date information about the virus is here:

Most people will only have mild symptoms - like the continuous cough.

Cough is a cause of leaking, and so, we will see a spike in women who contract Covid-19  developing stress incontinence; just as many women in areas of Australia affected by the bush fires developed chronic cough from poor air quality from the bush fires - and then stress incontinence.

WHAT CAN I DO?

KEEP DOING YOUR PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES!

Yes, even if it feels likest's not working, even if your pelvic floor feels half asleep or has post-viral weariness - keep doing them!

USE "THE KNACK"

When you feel that tickle start, before the cough comes, contract your pelvic floor.  That will support the neck of your bladder and help keep you dry.

DON'T GET CONSTIPATED!

Seriously, that is not going to help.  A full rectum irritates bladders, often sorting the constipation eases the urinary leaking. So, eat well, drink plenty water, and have a chat with your pharmacist if you usually strain on the loo.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DRINK

Caffeine, alcohol, fizzy drinks and citrus or spicy foods can all irritate bladders.  Try cutting down on the number of coffees you are using to keep awake and see if that helps your leaking symptoms.

DON'T PUT UP WITH IT!

If you do your pelvic floor exercises and the leaking doesn't go away - see a pelvic physiotherapist, or speak to your GP.
